Shikumen, a residential architectural style unique to Shanghai, is predominantly found in the old lanes of the city. These traditional buildings largely incorporate elements from Jiangnan residential styles, featuring stone door frames and solid black lacquer wooden doors, hence the name ‘Shikumen’. The majority of Shikumen architecture in Shanghai is concentrated in Huangpu and Jing’an districts. The Shikumen at No. 96 Shaoxing Road is one of the more well-preserved examples, often chosen as a filming location for movies and TV series depicting old Shanghai. The residents here are accustomed to the limelight, remaining calm and composed when they see cameras and film crews bustling about in the alleyways, as if the cultural essence of Shaoxing Road has seeped into their very being. The site is open to the public all year round, accessible 24/7.
