Shushan Ancient South Street is located in Dingshu Town, Yixing City. It is south of Li River and north of Shushan Mountain. The street is thousands of meters long and only three to four meters wide. The buildings on the street are all two-story buildings with brick and wood structures. The naturally balanced streetscape continues day after day the wet story of the old street like the drizzle in the south of the Yangtze River.
Women sitting by the door and picking vegetables, old people playing chess with bare upper bodies while waving cattail leaf fans, strong men holding purple clay pots, little dogs wagging their tails and passing by on the street corner, people playing mahjong in the dim light… These scenes make the typical ancient street in the south of the Yangtze River during the Ming and Qing Dynasties flow with the poetic charm of the pottery capital along the Li River that runs through the ancient town of the pottery capital. As the first batch of ancient building protection units in Jiangsu Province and cultural relic protection units in Yixing City, the alleys of Shushan Old Street were said to be the bustling ‘Purple Clay Street’ in the old days. Here, more than half of the households are engaged in purple clay production and operation. They use their own houses. The back houses are production workshops, and the front houses facing the street are set up with shelves for business operations. There are more than 30 purple clay pottery stores in the entire old street, which shows the prosperity of the purple clay industry at that time. In addition to pottery stores, there are also teahouses, cloth stores, hardware stores and small department stores on the old street. They are all centered around families. They live in peace and do business honestly, living a self-sufficient life without competing with the world. The Li River beside the old street is full of large and small wooden boats, including fishermen, rural farmers transporting vegetables, and more are transport ships for ceramic products. Through this river, ceramics from the south street are transported to all directions. The specific business hours and opening status are subject to the opening situation on the day.Shushan Ancient South Street
