Sinan Road is often referred to as the ‘harem’ of Huaihai Road, hidden behind the bustling streets like a secluded lotus, serene and tranquil, narrating the history of old Shanghai and the stories of bygone years at a leisurely pace.

Named after the early 20th-century French composer Jules Massenet, Sinan Road is a renowned French-style avenue, a clean and romantic one-way street lined with towering French plane trees, connecting Huaihai Road with Xujiahui.

The garden villas on either side of the road display a variety of styles, English, French, and Spanish, reflecting their status before the liberation. It is said that Sinan Road has more than twenty garden-style villas, concentrating almost all residential styles of old Shanghai—a living textbook of urban history. A walk here feels like a journey back to a time that was hectic yet still prosperous.

Today, Sinan Road not only preserves various former residences but also features Sinan Mansion, which has been transformed into a hotel. The street is also lined with specialty shops. Enjoy a cup of coffee in a café, or visit ‘Ani Noodle House’ for a bowl of authentic yellow croaker noodles for only twenty yuan, then browse the antique shops, savoring the unique history and romance of Shanghai amidst the nostalgia.

Sinan Road is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
