The ‘Shi Bi Liu Cong’ scenic area is located at the junction of Slender West Lake and the small canal, and is a key project in the construction of the Wan Hua Garden. It is also one of the historical twenty-four scenes of Slender West Lake. Its artificial mountains and stacked stones are among the largest in Yangzhou, and the cascading waterfalls are quite spectacular. Originally known as the Xu’s Villa, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the year of Yiyou, Qianlong bestowed the name ‘Shui Zhu Ju’ during his southern tour.
This garden features exquisitely arranged stones, piled peaks, and cascading spring water. The stone peaks emerge abruptly, as if cut by a knife, sharp as a sword, with cliffs reaching into the sky. Spring water flows from the crevices of the stones, hanging like a ribbon in the sky, winding along the banks and streams, covered with moss, splitting rocks, and shooting out in a gentle and smooth manner, bringing the lake to life, hence the name ‘Cong’. This flow of water gathers from various sources and impacts from high to low, forming a waterfall. The falling waterfall is as swift as the wind, with a sound like thunder, and when facing the water, splashes scatter in all directions, creating a spectacular view. There are many unique and characteristic scenic spots here. The Redology scholar Mr. Zhou Ruchang once pointed out that the main scenic spot in ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, Yi Hong Yuan, was modeled after the Yangzhou Shui Zhu Ju. The scenic area is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.Slender West Lake Scenic Area – Shi Bi Liu Cong
