Songzi Laifeng Bridge, also known as the ‘Sunny Rain Bridge’ by locals, is located on the east side of Xiaotong Street in the Xitang Scenic Area. It is one of the must-visit ancient bridges in Xitang due to its unique design and the symbolic meaning of ‘bringing children and attracting phoenixes’. This three-arch stone slab bridge is approximately 10 meters wide, with a canopy on top for shade and rain protection, and has railings and long stone benches on both sides, providing a perfect spot for a rest and to enjoy the scenery or take photos.
What is particularly noteworthy is the central flower wall that divides the bridge into north and south sides. The southern side features steps, symbolizing men’s continuous rise in status; the northern side is a ramp, suitable for ancient women with small bound feet, symbolizing stable family management. Hence, the saying goes, ‘For newlywed couples who cross this bridge, the south side brings children, and the north side welcomes the phoenix.’ Couples wishing for children may walk across the bridge for a good omen. Additionally, Songzi Laifeng Bridge is one of the two boat piers in the ancient town. Boarding a traditional Wupeng boat, whether for a daytime tour or a night tour of the ancient town, offers a pleasant experience. The bridge is open all year round, 24 hours a day. Essential Tips: 1. On weekends or holidays, you may encounter local theater enthusiasts entertaining themselves on the bridge with music and performances, offering a unique taste of the Jiangnan region. 2. The flower wall on the bridge has numerous graffiti and messages left by tourists. It is advised to visit civilly and avoid defacing the bridge with graffiti.Songzi Laifeng Bridge
