Songzi Laifeng Bridge, also known as the ‘Sunny Rain Bridge’ by locals, is located on the east side of Xiaotong Street in the Xitang Scenic Area. It is a key landmark in the heart of the ancient town due to two reasons: first, its connection to the Misty Rain Corridor, and second, its unique design and the symbolic meaning of ‘sending sons and welcoming auspiciousness.’ This three-arch stone bridge is approximately 10 meters wide, with a canopy on the top to provide shade and shelter from the rain. It features railings and long stone benches on both sides, offering a perfect spot to rest, enjoy the view, and take photos.
Particularly noteworthy is the central flower wall that divides the bridge into a southern and northern side. The south side features steps, symbolizing men’s continuous rise in status, while the north side has a slope, suitable for ancient women with bound feet to take small steps, symbolizing a stable and well-managed household. There is a popular saying that ‘couples who cross this bridge on their wedding day will be blessed with a son from the south and auspiciousness from the north.’ Those wishing for offspring are encouraged to walk across the bridge for good fortune. Additionally, Songzi Laifeng Bridge is one of the two boat piers in the ancient town. Boarding a traditional black awning boat for a daytime or nighttime tour of the ancient town is a memorable experience. The bridge is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day. Must-see tips: 1. On weekends and holidays, you may encounter local opera enthusiasts entertaining themselves on the bridge with music and song, adding a unique Jiangnan flavor. 2. The flower wall on the bridge has numerous graffiti and messages left by tourists. It is advised to maintain a civilized visit and refrain from defacing the wall.Must Read
