The ancient street is located on Hedong Street in Tangshi Town adjacent to Shajiabang. Tangshi Town was formerly known as Youjing and Yuxi and is one of the four ancient towns in Changshu. Relying on the water transportation advantage intersecting with Kunshan and Wuxian counties, the ancient town has developed commerce and trade and is reputed as ‘Golden Tangshi Town’. In the past, Hedong Street was the main commercial area with shops lining on both sides.

Hexi was the residential area with private gardens and residences following one after another. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, famous scholars Zhang Pu, Zhang Cai from the three Wu regions and Yang Yi and others from the local area established the ‘Yingshe Society’ in Fengji Garden in Tangshi Town and discussed and taught each other, and they were respected as the ‘Tangshi School’. In the early Qing Dynasty, Gu Yanwu once accompanied his mother to avoid the war and lived in seclusion in Tangshi Town to give lectures for several years.

There are many existing cultural relics and historic sites in the ancient town. Today, there is still a section of stone slab street constructed in the Ming Dynasty on Hedong Street, about 400 meters long, which is beloved by tourists visiting ancient sites.
