Located within the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products at 1262 Yan’an West Road, there stands a distinctive and picturesque garden villa, once the residence of Sun Ke, the grandson of Mr. Sun Yat-sen. This villa, originally at 22 Columbia Road (now 60 Panyu Road), is now accessible only through Yan’an West Road as the original entrance has been sealed.
The Sun Ke residence covers an area of approximately 8000 square meters with a current construction area of 1000 square meters. The main building features Spanish architecture with Baroque elements. The sloping roofs are covered with red tiles, and the eaves and details are meticulously decorated. The door and window frames vary in form, and various arches are used. The chimney on the top of the fireplace resembles the style of the Italian Renaissance period. The exterior walls are simple and bright, embodying the style and grandeur of Western modernist architecture, common in buildings constructed in Shanghai since the 1920s and 1930s. In front of the house lies a typical spacious Chinese-style courtyard, surrounded by various precious trees forming a dense canopy. The courtyard is adorned with lawns, water features, and lake stones, creating a delightful scene. The building was designed by Laszlo Hudec. The indoor wooden staircase is finely crafted, and the floors of the bedrooms, living rooms, and study rooms are all made of imported teakwood strips arranged in a mat pattern. The platforms and balconies are spacious, with light and aesthetically pleasing cast iron railings. Standing on the balcony and overlooking the garden view is a sweet pleasure. This luxurious building, constructed in the 1930s, is open from 7/9 to 8/3 from 10:00 to 17:00, with limited-time opening during the exhibition period from July 9th to August 3rd, 10:00 to 17:00.Sun Ke Villa
