Sun’s Square Building is located at No. 82 Qingyuan Street in the Diaohua Building Scenic Area, Koukou. It was built at the end of the Qing Dynasty and was the former residence of Mr. Sun Gongfu. Although Mr. Sun made a living by running a department store, he was particularly enthusiastic about public welfare and donated funds to establish Jiangsu Province Koukou Middle School in 1926.
Sun’s Square Building faces west and is oriented towards the east, with a square plan and two two-story buildings to the east and west. Between the two small buildings, there is a small patio with a corridor style, and the outer side of the second floor of the patio is carved with a variety of exquisite carvings. The second floor of the corridor is surrounded by European-style cast iron railings, a product of the Qing Dynasty’s ‘Westernization’ era.
In 2010, the house was listed as a municipal cultural protection unit by Taizhou City and was renovated. It is now opened as the ‘National Culture Enlightenment Hall’, which includes private school halls, Chinese preschool education, Chinese folklore, and Chinese encyclopedias. It focuses on displaying the knowledge of national culture and the historical evolution of traditional private schools, in order to promote the national culture and the good tradition of respecting teachers and valuing education in Gaogang area. The opening hours are from 09:00 to 17:30 all year round; from 09:00 to 17:00 all year round.
