Suojiang Tower is located on the banks of the Yangtze River in the urban area of Jiujiang City. When entering the waters of Jiujiang by boat, the pagoda of Suojiang Tower (Wenfeng Tower) comes into view, making Suojiang Tower a symbol of Jiujiang.
Originally, Suojiang Tower consisted of one building and one pagoda. In the 14th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1586), Wu Xiu, the then-governor of Jiujiang, funded the construction of Suojiang Tower on the Huilong Jetty by the river to prevent water disasters, following the advice of yin-yang experts. It was then called the River Heaven Lock Key Tower, a three-story building with four iron oxen to suppress the water beside the building. Later, a 25.26-meter-tall pagoda named Wenfeng Tower, also known as Huilong Tower, was built to the south of the building, with a wooden ladder inside for spiraling ascent.
After several destructions and repairs, Suojiang Tower was reconstructed on the original site after liberation, covering an area of 18,000 square meters. Between the Jiujiang Yangtze River Bridge and Wenfeng Tower, two new bronze oxen were cast, each measuring 3.1 meters in length, 2.7 meters in height, 1.5 meters in width, and weighing 1.5 tons, once again recreating the historical style of the tower and pagoda standing together with bronze oxen suppressing the water.
