Suyuan Park is located in the residential area of Suyuan New Village on South Renmin Road in Suzhou. With an area of nearly 15 mu, it is a recreational park built by Wu County Government in 1990. The park gate is designed with great ingenuity, integrating management, sales booths and grape trellises. It has a simple and unadorned appearance, a rigorous composition and rich spatial changes. It is not only the prelude to entering the park, but also the transition between the residential area and the park space.

Entering the gate is a small courtyard of more than 100 square meters, leading to the recreational area and children’s playground respectively. Walking east through the circular hole door in the whitewashed wall, one is faced with a pool of water. At the north end of the pool, the winding corridor is connected with Pinxiang Residence. Pinxiang Residence faces south. Its eaves are slightly raised. The begonias are on the long windows reaching the ground.

The whitewashed wall in the north of the house separates the courtyard. The circular moon gate leads directly to the children’s playground. Pinxiang Residence is a restaurant for the public to taste local snacks. The interior decoration is simple and generous. Looking south across the water from Pinxiang Residence is the Hehuan Hall teahouse located on the sandbank. The north corridor of Hehuan Hall hangs over the water.

The western corridor bridge is like a flying rainbow and is connected with the winding corridor along the river in the west of the park. The Yige Pavilion in the southwest is built across the river. The half pavilion probes into the water. The walkways are connected. The scenery changes with every step. There are two small bridges on the east side of the sandbank to connect the middle part of the park.

On the west bank of the pool between Pinxiang Residence and Hehuan Hall, there is a stone pier protruding into the pool under the corridor. On the top, there is a small square pavilion with pyramidal roof. Four circular moon gates are inlaid in the four whitewashed walls under the eaves and are set off by the water surface. Just as it is said, ‘A small piece of land contains the ancient moon; there are gentle winds and timely rains in all four seasons.

‘ Entering the pavilion and taking a short rest, one can see framed sceneries through the circular holes. On the opposite bank of the square pavilion, there is a hillock rising. The yellow stones stand upright like being split by an axe. A delicate hexagonal pavilion is built on the top of the cliff. The western garden is only more than five mu in size, with elegant landscapes. In the eastern cedar forest, it is another scene.

The terrain is slightly undulating. Trees and shrubs are clustered into forests. The lawn is vast and green. The brook is clear and flowing, making people feel comfortable and pleased. Open all year round and all day long.
