Suzhou is not only a city of gardens but also a home of silk. The theme of the Silk Museum building is the ‘Silk Road’, capturing the historical connection between the ancient Silk Road and the modern Silk City, reflecting the open-mindedness of cultural exchange between the East and West. The overall color scheme is predominantly white, reflecting the natural color of silk.

In the main square at the entrance, one can see an east-west passage symbolizing the ‘Silk Road’, intersecting with the fully enclosed modern white walls that run through the main building from north to south. The wall makes a natural bend at the entrance, symbolizing the softness and elegance of silk. At the top of the wall, a row of stylized mulberry trees stand upright, with circular hollows in the middle, resembling a section of the ancient city wall along the Silk Road. In front of the wall, there are three white marble statues of silk maidens, silk spinning women, and silk weavers, respectively.

The museum is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00; closed all day on Mondays; and open on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, 09:00-17:00. The museum may temporarily close if there are significant events or important equipment maintenance.
