Suzhou is not only a city of gardens but also the home of silk. The theme of the silk museum building is the ‘Silk Road’, grasping the historical connection between the ancient Silk Road and the modern silk city and reflecting the open consciousness of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. The overall color is mainly white, reflecting the natural color of silk. In the gate square, one can see an east-west passage symbolizing the ‘Silk Road’, intersecting with the fully enclosed modern white wall running north-south through the main building. The wall makes a natural bend at the entrance, symbolizing the softness and elegance of silk. There is a row of variant mulberry trees standing upright on the top of the wall, with a circular hollow in the middle, just like a section of the ancient city wall stretching on the Silk Road. In front of the wall are three white marble statues of mulberry-picking women, yarn-reeling women and silk-weaving women respectively.
