The Yuantong Art Museum is located east of the wall of the Master-of-Nets Garden. According to records, Yuantong Temple was built during the Chunxi period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1176-1189). It was rebuilt in 1903. From 1932 to 1936, Zhang Shanzi, Zhang Daqian, Ye Gongchuo, Xiao Tuian and others once lived in the temple and practiced Buddhism and meditation. In 2007, people from society rebuilt Yuantong Temple.
A private art museum was established at the original site, and the ‘Suzhou Prehistoric Jade Research Association’ and the ‘Suzhou Prehistoric Jade Museum’ were established. This museum mainly displays prehistoric Chinese civilization jades (Hongshan culture in Northeast China 6500-5000 years ago, Qijia culture in Northwest China 4200-3800 years ago, Liangzhu culture in Taihu Basin 5300-4200 years ago). It is oriented towards collection, display, exchange, and research. Prehistoric jades are cultural carriers that reflect a relatively high level of prehistoric civilization. They reflect the religion, etiquette, beliefs, and even aesthetic concepts of ancient times. It can be said to be a miniature history of Chinese civilization. There is the studio of ‘Taihu Layman’ Zhu Shenguang, an oil painter living in the United States. The art collections include early precious authentic oil paintings by Chinese modern and contemporary oil painting masters Liu Haisu, Wu Zuoren, Chang Shuhong, etc., and fine porcelain from past dynasties. It shows domestic and foreign collectors the profound cultural connotations of collections and the charm of Suzhou’s humanities.Suzhou Yuantong Art Museum
