Yuantouzhu, the essence of Yuantouzhu Scenic Area, is a prime location to appreciate the harmonious combination of mountains and waters in Taihu Lake. A range of green peaks extends from Chongshan, winding down into the vast waves of Taihu Lake. The mythical rock at the headland, surrounded by water on three sides and standing firm against the waves, resembles a vivid divine turtle, raising its head amidst the clear waters, exuding a heroic and spirited aura. Yuantouzhu features a lighthouse, standing perilously by the lake. It serves as a navigational aid on the headland, ensuring safe passage and embellishing the landscape. Behind the lighthouse, the ‘Yuantouzhu’ inscription stands tall at over 2 meters, with the words ‘Yuantouzhu’ carved on the front, written by Qin Dunshi, a juren from Wuxi during the Guangxu period. On the back, it is inscribed with ‘Yuantouzhu Spring Waves’. The ‘Hanxu Pavilion’, an octagonal structure, is also built on the headland, housing a plaque inscribed by Chen Kuilong in 1919. The garden’s mountains, forests, pavilions, and towers are subtly revealed; the lakeside lighthouse stands tall; islands seem to float in the distance, and the sound of waves crashing on the shore is heard nearby. Numerous scenic spots line the lake’s shore, highlighting the accumulation of historical events. The main attractions include the lighthouse, the ‘Yuantouzhu’ stele, ‘Hengyun’ cliff carvings, ‘Zheze Divine Turtle’ bronze statue, Chenglan Hall, and Feiyunge Pavilion. Open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
