Taiqing Temple has endured many vicissitudes and has experienced repeated rises and falls. In the third year of Tianyou in the Tang Dynasty (906), commoners Dai Sixun and Lu Dun conspired and summoned monk Xu Lingsi to establish it as a temple. In the fourth year of Jingde in the Song Dynasty (1007), Emperor Zhenzong Zhao Heng bestowed the name ‘Jingde Courtyard’. In the third year of Tiansheng (1025), it was renamed ‘Taiqing Courtyard’. The ancient Taiqing Temple is located at the southern foot of the western part of Shashan Mountain, within Xiangyang Village, Jiangyin City. It is adjacent to Huaxi Village, known as ‘the number one village in the world’. According to legend, it was built by Wu Guotai, the mother of Sun Quan, the great emperor of the Eastern Wu during the Chiru years (238 – 251 AD). Among the seven temples and eight pagodas in Jiangnan, Taiqing Temple is one of them. In this prosperous era, the ancient temple is full of spring.
