Taizhou Museum is a comprehensive museum primarily dedicated to the collection of historical artifacts, housing nearly ten thousand pieces of various types. It is particularly renowned for its ancient calligraphy and paintings, Ming Dynasty garments, and Six Dynasties celadon. The museum boasts a vast collection of ancient calligraphy and paintings, including works by renowned Ming Dynasty court painter Lu Ji, the founder of the Wulin School Lan Ying, and notable artists such as Dong Qichang, Wen Zhengming, Zhang Chong, Tang Zhiqi, Xie Shichen, Wu Bin, Cheng Sheng, and Zhang Feng. Other notable pieces include works by Qing Dynasty artists Zhu Da (Badashanren), Shi Tao, Yun Nantian, Fei Danxu, and Lian Xi, as well as the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics Zheng Banqiao, Huang Shen, Li Jie, and Wang Shizhen. The museum also features works by Jinling School artists like Cai Ze, and pieces by Qing Dynasty notables Liu Yong, Lin Zexu, Tie Bao, and Li Hongzhang, along with modern artists Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Chen Shiceng, and Yu Youren.


The museum’s collection of Ming Dynasty garments is one of the most concentrated and well-preserved collections of civilian textiles from the Ming Dynasty, especially silk fabrics, which represent high-quality civilian attire from the mid-Ming period. The ceramics collection includes numerous fine pieces of Six Dynasties celadon, as well as porcelain from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The museum also houses a variety of distinctive artifacts, such as one of the world’s only relatively complete male Kanglu fossils, a Han Dynasty bronze mirror with mythical beast patterns, hundreds of pieces of the Forbidden City archives, Qing Dynasty transportation archives, and Qing Dynasty handicrafts.


The museum is open year-round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00; closed all day on Mondays; open on Mid-Autumn Festival from 09:00-18:30; and open on National Day from 09:00-18:30. Please refer to the daily opening status for specific business conditions.
