Tian Hou Palace, also known as Tam Kong Temple, was constructed during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. A historical bell inscribed with the words ‘Placed in the fiftieth year of Qianlong’ confirms that the temple has existed since at least 1785, making it one of the oldest temples in Taipa. Tian Hou, or Mazu, is a deity believed to have the ability to predict fortune and misfortune from a young age. She is said to often manifest on the sea to help merchants and fishermen avert disasters and turn dangers into safety, which is why local fishermen hold her in high regard. Originally, the temple was quite large, housing precious antique plaques, bells, incense tables, and other valuable cultural relics. Today, only the main hall remains, dedicated to the worship of Tian Hou. The temple is open all year round, with access available twenty-four hours a day.
