From the bustling Huaihai Road or Wenhuan North Road in the old city of Yangzhou, take a quiet turn into the depths of Tuoling Alley, and you will encounter an ancient tree that has withstood the test of time. Although its trunk may appear somewhat weathered, the crown still stands tall and vibrant, exuding life and vigor, standing tall beside a residential courtyard in the alley. Many local people in Yangzhou even regard this ancient tree as a divine entity and pay homage to it.
According to the tree plaque hung by the Yangzhou City Garden Administration, the scientific name of the tree is Sophora japonica. It was 1060 years old when the plaque was hung in 2011 and is classified as a first-level protected tree. Next to the ancient tree stands a white marble stele, inscribed with the words ‘Tang Huai’. The stele records that this Tang Huai is mentioned in the story ‘The Governor of Nanke’ written by Li Gongzuo during the Tang Dynasty—it is the ‘Nanke’ of the ‘Nanke Dream’. The site is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.Tang Huai – Ancient Chinese Scholar Tree in Yangzhou
