Tangmo is located 26 kilometers north of Tunxi District in Huangshan City. While it may not be as exquisite as Hongcun or Xidi, it offers a peaceful and less crowded environment. The Tangan Stream runs through the village, flanked by ancient stone streets and historical buildings. Among the ancient structures, the Tangan Garden stands out for its distinctive features.
Tangmo was founded by Shujv, the great-great-grandfather of Wang Hua, the Duke of Yue during the Tang Dynasty. The Wang family, in gratitude for the grace of the Tang Dynasty, named the village ‘Tangmo’. Later, the Xu family joined the Wangs and gradually became the largest family in the village.

The ancient village extends east to west with a single main road, accompanied by the Tangan Stream, making it easy to tour along the water. At the eastern end of the village stands a 400-year-old camphor tree named ‘Huaiyin Tree’, which played a role in the matchmaking of the Seven Fairies and Dong Yong in the TV drama ‘Fairy Match’. Next to the tree is the Shadi Pavilion (Octagonal Pavilion), built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. It is a three-story structure with a hollow center on each level, supported by slender columns on the outside, featuring a unique design.

Following the ancient post road and passing through the Tongbao Hanlin Square, built to commemorate the Kangxi Emperor’s appointment of two Xu brothers to the Hanlin Academy, one officially enters the village. Not far from the square is the featured attraction of Tangmo, the Shuikou Garden ‘Tangan Garden’, built by a filial son in the early Qing Dynasty to fulfill his mother’s wish to see West Lake. Inside the garden’s courtyard, there are buildings such as Zhaochun Hall, Zhonglie Temple, and a small private school.

Exiting the courtyard leads to the Xiao Xihu (Filial Son Lake), a miniature West Lake, which includes attractions like ‘Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon’, ‘Bai Causeway’, and ‘Yudai Bridge’. Notably, the central pavilion on the lake, Jingting, displays the genuine calligraphy inscriptions of many great calligraphers such as Su Shi, Zhu Xi, and Wen Zhengming.

Traveling west to the central part of the village, one can enjoy a cup of Huangshan Maofeng tea and chat with locals in the small house on the Qing Dynasty’s two-arched corridor bridge, ‘Gaoyang Bridge’. After crossing the bridge, one can see the millennia-old ginkgo tree. The western half of the village mainly features ancestral halls, with the Xu Family Ancestral Hall at the center, followed by three branch halls to the west: Guan Ci Shang Yitang, commerce-oriented Ji Shan Tang, and common people’s Jun Hui Tang.

In addition to these, there are other attractions such as the former residence of Xu Chengyao and old workshops to visit. The Water Street is also a distinctive feature of Tangmo, generally referring to the main road and the Tangan Stream, with ten uniquely shaped stone bridges spanning the stream. The essence of the Water Street is located to the west of Gaoyang Bridge, a 40-meter stretch with a rain corridor, where one can rest by the water, watch art students sketching, and take a break, which is very pleasant.

There are a few restaurants in Tangmo village, but they are quite ordinary. For authentic Huizhou cuisine, it is recommended to visit Tunxi Old Street in Huangshan City or She County, 9 kilometers to the east. However, Tangmo is not large, and it is often visited together with nearby attractions such as Qian Kou Minzhai, Chengkan, Tangyue Memorial Archways, Baojia Garden, and Huizhou Ancient City. It might be better to choose accommodations in Huangshan City or other locations.
