The Chenghuang Temple of Huzhou Prefecture is located between Renmin Road and North Street in Huzhou City. It is commonly known as ‘temple within a temple’ and is one of the three unique features of Hucheng. In the old days, just like the Confucius Temple in Nanjing, the Chenghuang Temple in Hangzhou, and the Xuanmiao Temple in Suzhou, in addition to religious and sacrificial activities, the Prefectural Deity Temple was also an entertainment venue for people. As a place for sacrificial activities, sacrifices were offered to the Chenghuang God of Huzhou. In the religious history of the Prefectural Deity Temple, it was presided over by Taoism (the Prefectural Deity Temple is a Taoist temple presided over by the orthodox sect). Throughout the year, itinerant entertainers (such as drama, acrobatics, magic, etc.) come here to perform. The Prefectural Deity Temple is also the birthplace of storytelling of Huzhou’s grand books and lakeside beaches. Before the Anti-Japanese War, a domestic products shopping mall was established. There are also various stalls selling snacks, department stores, fortune-telling by astrology, character divination, and fortune-telling by physiognomy. It is a colorful and diverse scene with everything imaginable.
