According to historical records of Teng State Ancient City: ‘The ancient city spans a circumference of twenty li with a smaller city within.

‘ The city walls are still faintly visible today, with the ‘outer city’ roughly square-shaped, stretching from east to west. Along the western wall of the outer city, heading south, there is a trench known as ‘Xi Hai Zi,’ which was the ancient moat; within the outer city, at the southeast and northwest ends, there are marshes, once filled with lotus, earning the city the reputation of ‘two ponds of lotus, one city of hibiscus.

‘ The ‘smaller city’ is situated in the middle of the outer city, also roughly square-shaped, with a perimeter of over ten Chinese miles. Over the past century, local residents have built earthen forts on the original city foundation to protect against military disasters and floods. The ‘smaller city’ now stands 3-4 meters above the ground, with the top of the city walls covered in locust trees, providing shade and fragrance.

Inside the city lies Tengcheng Village, surrounded by lush orchards and farmland, exuding vitality. In the northeast corner of the city, there is a high platform known as ‘Wen Gong Tai,’ also called ‘Ling Tai.’ Below the platform is a pond, believed to be ‘Ling Chi.’ Teng Wen Gong emulated King Wen by building a spirit platform and digging a spirit pond to share joy with the people. During the Ming Wanli period, a True Martial Temple was constructed on the platform.

The temple’s left wing door is flanked by a couplet inscribed on bricks by Qing Dynasty scholar Wei Jichang: ‘Ancient sites enter the Jing River, once on a high platform remembering the world’s son; the legacy of the original uncle’s embroidery, do not mistake the flying pavilion for the King of Teng.’ To the east of the high platform, there are ancient buildings such as ‘Wen Chang Pavilion,’ ‘Lu Zu Pavilion,’ ‘Merit Shrine,’ and ‘Rest Shrine.

‘ There is also a merit stone inscribed with a touching story. On the platform, there is a huge stone with the word ‘spectacular’ written by Li Bai. In front of the platform, there are two ancient locust trees, vigorous and simple, facing each other with lush branches, said to have been planted during the Tang Zhen Guan era, over 1000 years ago, and revered by the local people as ‘divine trees.’ The newly built stele forest to the east of the platform displays a collection of steles, tomb inscriptions, Tang royal family statues, Tang Xingguo Temple steles, Tang Liangshan Ye Niang steles, Jin Taiping Temple steles, Jin Da Ding steles, Song Emperor Taizu Zhao Kuangyin’s imperial edict steles, Yuan Daqing steles, and calligraphic art stone carvings by Hua Shi Kui and others, for visitors to appreciate.
