The 39th Shanghai Spring International Music Festival

The 39th Shanghai Spring International Music Festival will be held from March 22 to April 14. This year’s music festival takes ‘Praising the New Era’ as its theme and presents a series of activities such as youth talent cultivation, international cultural exchanges, and excellent project exhibitions. During the music festival, there will be 66 main performances, including 57 music performances and 9 dance performances. In addition, there will be 10 special theme activities, including 2 festival-within-festival events, 3 collection activities, and 5 educational achievement display and performance activities. The opening performance of the music festival will be held at the Shanghai Symphony Hall on the evening of March 22, presenting the theme concert ‘The Spring Tide of the Huangpu River · Setting Sail for a New Journey’ to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It will perform famous classics such as Lu Qiming’s piano and orchestra version of ‘Ode to the Red Flag’, as well as excellent works that have stood out in recent years in special exhibitions hosted by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the China Musicians Association, such as the orchestral music ‘The Bright Red Sun’ and the symphony ‘New Era’. Many literary and artistic classics have emerged on the stage of Shanghai Spring. 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the premiere of the ballet ‘The White-Haired Girl’. This music festival will commemorate this classic dance drama through various forms such as reproducing the classics, holding discussions and retrospectives, and displaying pictures. In 1965, ‘Ode to the Red Flag’ composed by composer Lu Qiming was a great success after its public premiere at the opening ceremony of the sixth ‘Shanghai Spring’. The organizers will actively promote the recording and publishing of vinyl records of the ‘Ode to the Red Flag’ series of works this year and have famous artists perform them in many important performances to spread classic masterpieces. Erhu virtuoso Min Huifen won the crown in the national erhu competition of the fourth ‘Shanghai Spring’ and thus became known nationwide. During this music festival, the ‘Eternal Fragrance’ commemorative Min Huifen erhu concert and related activities will be held. The closing performance of the music festival will be held at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Opera House on the evening of April 14. The Como Opera House in Italy and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music will jointly perform Rossini’s opera ‘The Barber of Seville’. During the music festival, there will be more than 20 international performances coming to Shanghai for exchanges. The music festival also joins hands with the Shanghai International Culture Association and the Consulate General of France in Shanghai to hold the ‘Sino-French Music Exchange and Exhibition Season’.
