The Fifth Spring is located south of the Qianlong Imperial Stele Pavilion within the Daming Temple. On the stone well curb of the Fifth Spring, the words ‘Fifth Spring’ and ‘Respectfully established on an auspicious day in August of the second year of Guangxu’ are inscribed. The well is surrounded by small blue bricks, forming a hexagonal shape, with a rectangular stone stele on the west side, measuring 0.8 meters in width and 2.1 meters in height. The stele bears the inscription (in intaglio) ‘Fifth Spring’ in three large characters, written by Xu Jiugao, the salt inspector of Yuyao during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566). Around the Fifth Spring, there are Huangshan rockery stones, a secluded stone gate, a stone cave, and an irregularly shaped pool, with yellow stone steps and a stone bridge set up in the pool. Nowadays, a new Five Springs Tea House has been built in the west garden of Daming Temple. After touring the scenic spots of Shugang, visitors can rest in the tea house, sipping freshly brewed tea with water from the Fifth Spring, leaving a lingering fragrance on the cheeks, truly a delightful pleasure. Open all year round, accessible 24/7.
