The Huangpu River, known as the ‘Mother River of Shanghai’, serves as the boundary between Pudong and Puxi, giving rise to world-renowned landmarks such as the Bund and Lujiazui Financial Center. A visit to Shanghai is incomplete without witnessing the dazzling night scene of the Huangpu River, where you can also take a cruise to enjoy the panoramic views of both banks. Spanning approximately 113 kilometers with a width ranging from 300 to 700 meters, the Huangpu River flows through various districts of Shanghai, embodying the city’s essence and symbolizing its urban landscape.

The Bund and Binjiang Avenue along the riverbank are excellent vantage points, with Binjiang Avenue being less crowded compared to the Bund. Strolling along the river, the contrast between the Bund’s richly exotic architecture on the west bank and the modern skyscrapers rising on the east bank offers a glimpse into Shanghai’s century-long development. The Huangpu River’s night view is a must-see. As night falls, the riverbanks are illuminated, and you can embark on a cruise from the Shiliupu Wharf on Zhongshan East Second Road in Huangpu District.

The cruise takes you past the Yangpu and Nanpu Bridges, the classic Waibai Du Bridge resembling a jade belt, the scenic Binjiang Avenue in Pudong, and the uniquely shaped Shanghai International Convention Center, all under a splendid display of lights, creating a stunning visual feast. The cruise offers Chinese, Western, and buffet meals, allowing you to enjoy the river’s beauty while dining. The cruises operate daily from 11:00 to 21:30, with hourly departures from 11:00 to 13:00 and half-hourly departures from 13:00 to 21:30, with each journey lasting approximately 60 minutes.

For those who prefer a more economical and nostalgic experience, the ferry between Pudong and Puxi is a great option. The ferry runs between the Jinling East Road Ferry Terminal near the Bund and the Dongchang Road Ferry Terminal in Pudong, operating from 7:00 to 22:00, with a journey taking about ten minutes and departures every 15 minutes. There is also a ferry service between the Fuxing East Road Ferry Terminal and the Dongchang Road Ferry Terminal, with the Fuxing East Road Ferry Terminal operating from 7:00 to 19:00 and the Dongchang Road Ferry Terminal from 7:00 to 18:45, with departures every half hour.

The Huangpu River is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
