The Old Bund is located at the confluence of three rivers, right at the heart of Ningbo, with a history that predates Shanghai’s Bund by 20 years. Today, the Old Bund still preserves a large number of beautiful European-style old buildings, most of which have been transformed into chic bars and restaurants, forming a leisure area with a distinctive atmosphere and is one of the landmarks of Ningbo. Ningbo’s Old Bund is somewhat similar to Shanghai’s Bund, yet it has an added touch of delicacy.
Strolling around, taking pictures of the old buildings, or finding a small shop to sit down and have a drink are all very pleasant experiences here. During the day, it is very quiet with only a few tourists wandering around the streets, and it is common to see newlyweds taking wedding photos here. At night, the streets become very lively with melodious singing emanating from the bars, full of charm. Walking by the river, one can enjoy the enchanting night view of the confluence of the three rivers, and it is very romantic to take a walk with a loved one. In summer, the banks of the Yong River are also a great place to cool off. The architecture of the Old Bund is also a highlight, and although one cannot enter to visit, the exteriors are very flavorful. Whether it is day or night, the Gothic-style Jiangbei Catholic Church on the south side is a focal point for tourists, and the adjacent ruined walls have a feel reminiscent of the Old Summer Palace, making it a symbol of the Old Bund. Around the church, there are Hedefang, Hetaifang, Zilinfang, Hongchangyuan, and the Jiangbei Police Station, all of which are very characteristic old buildings. Another must-see is the Shikumen architectural complex of Zhu’s residence at the intersection of Yangshan Road and Zhongbei Road, where Western-style carvings are combined with traditional Ningbo residential buildings. The plum rain red stone door frame, paired with a heavy black lacquered wooden door and a pair of copper rings, is very unique. In addition, one can visit the Ningbo City Exhibition Hall on the north side of the street, where one can experience the past and future of Ningbo through three-dimensional virtual demonstrations, giving a wonderful immersive feeling.
