The concept of ‘immersive drama’ originated in the United Kingdom. Different from traditional drama, audiences no longer sit in fixed seats to watch performers on the stage. Instead, they freely move around in a theatrical space, actively explore the plot, and fully immerse themselves in the theater situation. “Sleep No More” is one of the classic works. Regarding Sleep No More, Shanghai, the Shanghai version sets the story in the McKinnon Hotel in the 1930s.
In this mysterious five-story building in the center of Shanghai, there are more than 90 theatrical spaces and more than 3,000 drawers. With movie-level stage design, the McKinnon Hotel is a time and space intertwined with reality and dreams. Entering the McKinnon Hotel, audiences put on a white ghost mask and incarnate as ghosts. They freely explore in the space, touch the furnishings and props in the hotel at will, perceive different musical scents, closely follow the performers to feel the joys and sorrows of the characters, and create a unique experience in an epic story. The story outline is adapted from Shakespeare’s work “Macbeth” and is a tragedy about the intersection of power and jealousy. The ambitious Scottish general Macbeth, under the instigation of three wizards and his wife, murders his colleague Banquo, King Duncan, and the noble Macduff and his wife and children step by step. Eventually, he is deserted by all. As the unique version of “Sleep No More” in Asia, the Shanghai version incorporates elements such as “The Legend of the White Snake” and “Rebecca”.
