The stone bridge spans across both banks, forming a natural beauty of ‘a rainbow lying on waves’. Since then, Tiansheng Bridge has become widely known. In the early 1990s, Professor Hu Jiaming, the dean of the National Water Transport Planning and Design Institute, called it ‘unique in the whole country and even the world’. Yanzhi River – Tiansheng Bridge has now been listed as a ‘cultural relic protection unit in Jiangsu Province’. It is one of the new forty-eight scenic spots in Jinling – Condensed Fat and Setting Sun Glow. Because the banks of the river are precipitous, steep, beautiful and secluded, it is also known as ‘the Small Three Gorges in the south of the Yangtze River’. According to records, when digging Yanzhi River, ‘a huge stone surface was left as a bridge, and more than ten zhang of stone holes were dug in the middle to allow boats and ships to pass. The bridge was formed according to the situation.’ Hence the name ‘Tiansheng’. Leaving a huge stone as a bridge on an artificial canal was really an initiative of craftsmen in those days. Unfortunately, the south bridge collapsed as early as 1528, leaving only the north bridge. The existing Tiansheng Bridge is 34 meters long and 9 meters wide. There is only one such Tiansheng Bridge formed by leaving huge stones on an artificial canal in China.
Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00.
