Tianyige Museum is located on the west bank of Yuehu Lake in Ningbo City, housing China’s oldest existing private library building – Tianyige. It was built as a book collection place by the retired official Fan Qin during the Jiajing years of the Ming Dynasty (1561-1566). The building is filled with ancient books and desks, exuding a strong scholarly atmosphere.
The museum itself is a Jiangnan garden, with the East Garden and South Garden featuring rockeries, ponds, pavilions, and other scenic spots scattered throughout. Walking through the ancient brick and wood corridors, one can feel the tranquil environment.
Within the garden, there is the Mingzhou Stele Forest, with hundreds of stone tablets recording the history of ancient official education. There is also a calligraphy and painting gallery that often displays the finest collections of calligraphy and painting from past dynasties and the works of famous literati.
Other structures within the garden include the ‘Dongming Thatched Cottage’, the place where books were stored before the construction of Tianyige, the ‘Qin Family Ancestral Hall’, which showcases the characteristics of Ningbo’s residential architecture, and the former residence of the Fan family.
In the Mahjong Exhibition Hall, one can see mahjong tiles and learn about the origin and development of mahjong culture.
