The Tianyi Pavilion Museum is located on the west bank of Yuehu Lake in Ningbo City, where the oldest existing private library in China, the Tianyi Pavilion, is situated. It was built by the retired official Fan Qin during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1561-1566) as a place to store books, filled with ancient books and desks, exuding a profound scholarly atmosphere.
The museum is, in fact, a Jiangnan garden, with the East Garden and South Garden featuring rockeries, ponds, pavilions, and other scenic spots arranged in a well-organized manner. Walking through the ancient brick and wood corridor, one can feel the tranquil environment. Inside the garden, there is the Mingzhou Stele Forest, with hundreds of stone tablets recording the educational history of ancient officials. There is also a calligraphy and painting gallery that frequently displays the finest collections of calligraphy and paintings from past dynasties housed in Tianyi Pavilion, as well as works by celebrities and scholars. Other buildings within the park include the ‘Dongming Thatched Cottage’, the place where books were stored before the construction of Tianyi Pavilion; the ‘Qin Family Ancestral Hall’, showcasing the architectural features of Ningbo’s residential buildings; and the former residence of the Fan family. In the Mahjong Exhibition Hall, one can see mahjong tiles, gaining insights into the origins and development of mahjong culture.
