The Tongcheng Ancient City District is the location of the Tongcheng city (county) government. It has a history of more than 1,200 years. The ancient city faces south and is backed by Yuping, Touzi, and Longmian mountains. It is flanked by the Shihe River and the Longmian River. The mountain scenery and water colors are extraordinarily enchanting. The ancient city is elegantly constructed with twists and turns. It is known as having ‘seven turns, eight corners, nine lanes, and thirteen alleys’. The well-preserved or restored ancient buildings in the city include: the magnificent ‘Tongcheng Confucian Temple’ which reflects the cultural characteristics of Tongcheng; the ‘Southeast Two Old Streets’ with upturned eaves and corners, reflecting the architectural characteristics of the Ming and Qing dynasties; the exquisitely shaped ‘Gaochun and Xuan’ with Jiangnan charm; the ‘Zilai Bridge’ with five piers and four openings spanning the Longmian River; the secluded and solemn ‘Jingtulan Society’ as if in a fairyland; the ‘Fairy Well’ that has not dried up for a thousand years and is full of legendary colors, and so on. Every step in the city reveals a relic of a famous person, such as Fang Xuejian’s ‘Lecture Garden’, Fang Yizhi’s former residence ‘Xiaosayuan’, Zuo Guangdou’s former residence ‘Danjiao Hall’ and ‘Zuo Gong Temple’, Zhang Ying and Zhang Tingyu’s ‘Prime Minister’s Mansion’ and the site of ‘Six-foot Alley’, Yao Nai’s ‘Xibao Xuan’ and the ginkgo tree he planted by hand, Yao Yuanzhi’s old residence ‘Zhuyeting’, Fang Dongshu’s ancestral temple, Fang Zongcheng’s former residence ‘Nine-room Building’, Wu Yuelun’s library ‘Banshan Pavilion’, Fang Shoudun’s poetry chanting pavilion ‘Lenghan Pavilion’, and the former residence of modern revolutionary martyr Wu Yue, etc., all vividly visible, showing the unique charm of the ancient city. Contemporary famous scholars and writers such as Zhu Guangqian, Fang Dongmei, Ye Dingyi, Fang Xiaoyue, Fang Lingru, Ma Maoyuan, Guang Renhong, and Shu Wu also left footprints of their youth in their hometown’s ancient city. The main scenic spots include: Zhu Guangqian’s former residence, etc. Luo Zhewen, a famous scholar of literature and history, wrote when inspecting the ancient city: ‘Thinking of the past, officials filled the capital and articles were the best in the world; looking at the present, culture and humanities are rising again and leading the way once more.’
