Established during the mid-Qing Dynasty, Tongxing Pawnshop was a major pawnshop in Gaoyou Prefecture during the Qing era. It is said that this pawnshop was a private property of Heshen’s family and was an official pawnshop. The counter that initially served the citizens for pawning was located on the east side, and there was also a guest room specifically for receiving guests, with very complete facilities. After Heshen’s downfall, the pawnshop was converted into a civilian one and changed hands several times. The patriotic figure, Ma Shijie, was a major shareholder at that time. In 1927, the pawnshop was robbed by the fleeing Northern Warlord Sun Chuanfang’s troops and subsequently went bankrupt. It later became a residential building and a small business for sustaining livelihoods. After liberation, it was allocated to the port authority’s handling association and the town’s production and office space, with the surplus being rented out by the real estate company for citizens to live in. Opening hours are from March 20th to December 31st, Tuesday to Sunday, 08:15-18:00; from January 1st to March 19th, Tuesday to Sunday, 08:30-17:00; and the entire Monday of the year is closed.
