The Wang Chang Memorial Hall is a two-story building. Upon entering the courtyard, one is greeted by lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and an atmosphere of tranquility that speaks of scholarly heritage.
In the center of the ground floor porch, there hangs a black plaque with gold inlay that reads ‘San Mao Fish Village’. Above the entrance columns, there is a couplet inscribed by Wang Chang and his friend Qian Daxin, now handwritten by a local, Zhong Zejun: ‘The true essence of literature reaches the realm of Ouyang Xiu and Zeng Gong, and the classics are still passed down like Zheng Xuan and Fu Qian’s garments.’ This implies that Wang Chang’s literary works have reached the level of the great Song Dynasty literati Ouyang Xiu and Zeng Gong, and in his studies of the classics, he has inherited the mantle of the Eastern Han Dynasty scholars Zheng Xuan and Fu Qian.
At the center of the entrance hall stands a bronze bust of Wang Chang, with walls adorned with frames related to Wang Chang and his calligraphy. The left wing room is the ‘Classics Training Hall’, while the right wing room is the ‘Spring Harmony Hall’ and ‘Zheng Xuan Study’. On the first floor, the first room features a lifelike statue of Wang Chang, Qian Daxin, and Liu Yong, who are depicted discussing literature and classics together; the middle room is Wang Chang’s bedroom, with simple bedding and an unadorned bed, reflecting his integrity and detachment as an official; the third room has two rows of long glass cabinets displaying Wang Chang’s works such as ‘Compilation of Inscriptions’, ‘Spring Harmony Hall Collection’, and ‘Taicang Records’.
