Wanqing Garden, originally named Mingzhen Cottage, was purchased in 1905 by Zhang Yongfu and his fifth brother for the purpose of providing a comfortable place for their mother to spend her twilight years. The name was changed to Wanqing Garden, borrowing the phrase ‘late sunshine’ from the Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin’s verse ‘The setting sun lingers over the fragrant grass, and people cherish the late sunshine’.
