The Wanxi Grand Canyon is located 25 kilometers south of Lu’an City, originally named Biwang Rock, and is said to have been named after Zhang Xianzhong, the leader of the peasant uprising army at the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing dynasties, who fought here. Local residents refer to it as the ‘Three Gates’. The entire scenic area is shaped like three sections of lotus roots and is highly popular for its canyon traversing and climbing activities.

The steep cliffs on both sides of the canyon are so narrow that only one person can pass through at a time, with some sections simply equipped with vertical iron ladders, making the climb quite challenging. In some places, one even has to step on the cliffs for leverage. Water curtains occasionally fall from the top of the cliffs, and although the canyon is not long, the joy of climbing is abundant.

Each gate of the Three Gates offers a different scenery: the first gate has steep cliffs on the north and south, with the valley bottom barely accommodating a foot; after exiting the first gate, there is a huge stone cave called the ‘Cave Palace’ on the southern cliff; the second gate is narrower and more perilous than the first, with cliffs forming a ‘slit in the sky’, allowing only a few rays of sunlight to enter the valley bottom, and there is a water curtain about 50 meters high inside the gate; the third gate is as tall as three-story building, requiring one to climb using both hands and feet.

In addition, the scenic area also features attractions such as the King’s Well and the Heroic Rock (Commander’s Platform). The Three Gates belong to the Grand Canyon, which is the experience area requiring one to walk through narrow rock crevices and climb. After passing through the Grand Canyon, one can reach the mountaintop for a view and then return via another good mountain path. During holidays, many tourists visit the scenic area, making it more embarrassing than ordinary scenic spots due to the congestion.

Imagine a large crowd stuck in the ‘slit in the sky’, unable to move left, right, forward, or backward, so it is recommended to visit on weekdays. As climbing in the Grand Canyon requires a certain amount of physical strength, children under 1.2 meters and elderly people over 70 years old are prohibited from taking the Grand Canyon route (experience area). They can take the easier mountain path to the top to enjoy the scenery and then return the same way.
