Weishan Island Scenic Area is located in the southeast of Weishan Lake, covering an area of 9 square kilometers with 14 administrative villages and a population of 15,000. The island is known for its beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural heritage, earning the title of ‘Harmony between Heaven and Man Home’ from the China Environmental Culture Promotion Association and being ranked first on the ‘Top 100 Chinese Ecological Water Scenery’ list. Every midsummer, the island is surrounded by a spectacular view of 100,000 acres of wild lotus flowers in full bloom.
With a long history and numerous historical sites, Weishan Island boasts the tombs of Wei Zi, Zhang Liang from the Han Dynasty, and Mu Yi from the Spring and Autumn period. It is also a famous base of anti-Japanese resistance, the cradle of the Railway Guerrilla, Wei Lake Brigade, and the Grand Canal Brigade. The Railway Guerrilla Memorial Park on the island is designated as ‘Jining City Patriotic Education Base’ and ‘Shandong Province National Defense Education Base’. Weishan Island is abundant in natural resources, often praised as ‘a place where the sun rises with gold’, with 78 species of fish and 87 species of aquatic plants. Over a hundred types of lake delicacies, mainly made from freshwater fish of Weishan Lake, such as ‘Floating Fish Balls’, ‘Old Turtle Leaning on the Riverbank’, and ‘Farewell My Concubine’, are well-known far and wide. Weishan Island has a unique location with convenient water and land transportation. It neighbors Zaozhuang City and Yicheng ‘Greatest Pomegranate Garden’ in Shandong Province to the east, ancient Pei County to the west, ancient Pengzhou Xuzhou in Jiangsu Province to the south, and the hometown of Confucius and Mencius, Zoucheng and Qufu, to the north. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Longhai Railway, Beijing-Fuzhou Expressway, National Highway 104, and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal all pass by the island.
