According to legend, in 1784, Emperor Qianlong took a boat tour of Slender West Lake in Yangzhou for the sixth time. When he saw the scenery around Wuting Bridge from the water, he couldn’t help but say with regret: ‘It’s a pity that there is no white pagoda. Otherwise, this place would look extremely similar to Qiongdao Chunyin in Beihai.’ The speaker had no intention, but the listener was attentive. The wealthy salt merchants in Yangzhou immediately spent 100,000 taels of silver to buy the blueprint of the White Pagoda in Beihai from the eunuch. That night, they piled up a white pagoda with white salt bags overnight. This is the story of ‘building a pagoda overnight’ that has been passed down in Yangzhou to this day. The White Pagoda in Yangzhou is 27.5 meters high. Below it is a girdled Xumizuo tower base, with eight sides and four corners. Each side has three niches, and inside the niches are carved the twelve Chinese zodiac signs. Different from the thick and stable White Pagoda in Beihai, the White Pagoda in Yangzhou has a well-proportioned ratio and stands gracefully, complementing the Wuting Bridge beside it.
