Wufeng Garden is one of the more famous gardens among many Suzhou gardens. It is located at No. 47 West Street of Changmen (now accessible from Wufengyuan Alley, Xiatang Street inside Changmen). In 1963, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Suzhou City. Today, Wufengyuan Alley covers an area of about 2.5 mu. It is a fine work among Suzhou gardens. It was built in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty by Yang Cheng of Changzhou. It is commonly known as ‘Yang’s Garden’. There are many explanations for the origin of the garden name. One theory is that the garden was built by Wen Bonian, a painter and nephew of Wen Zhengming. Wen Bonian is known as the ‘old man of five peaks’. Another theory is that the five Taihu stone peaks in the garden stand among high mounds and resemble old men. It is also known as the ‘five old peaks’. Opening hours: From January 1st to December 31st, it is open from 08:00 to 16:00.
