Located in the heart of the city at Taihu Square, with the ancient canal to its south, the Wuxi Museum is a merger of the former Wuxi Revolutionary Exhibition Hall, Wuxi Museum, and Wuxi Science and Technology Museum. Here, you can delve into the history of Wuxi, admire ancient artifacts and calligraphy, and enjoy the museum’s integration of high-tech facilities to enrich the visitor experience.
Spanning two underground levels and five above ground, the museum’s facade is imposing, gleaming golden under the sunlight and transformed into a dazzling spectacle of light at night. While the grandeur of the exterior might outshine the exhibits inside, it serves as a great educational venue for children. The layout of the exhibition areas within the building can be somewhat scattered, so if you lose your way, feel free to ask the staff for assistance.
The museum is divided into a historical section on the west, a science and technology section on the east, and a 4D cinema in the middle, which requires an additional fee of 30 yuan. The basement houses a virtual Western Art Gallery, styled in a European manner, showcasing famous Western artifacts and architecture through advanced multimedia. Temporary exhibitions are also held in the basement; for details, follow the official website.
The permanent exhibitions include the city-themed ‘Wu Style and Tin Charm’ (first floor), ‘Treasures from the Ancient Tomb’ displaying artifacts from the Yuan Dynasty Qian Yu Tomb, ‘Purple Jade and Gold Sand’ featuring Zisha teapots, ‘Elegant Charm of Clay Sculptures’ showcasing Huishan clay figurines, ‘Wuxi People’, and ‘Blood and Fire: A Brief History of Wuxi Revolution’. The Xu Beihong Art Pavilion displays some genuine works by Xu Beihong. Interactive high-tech facilities make the science-themed exhibition areas particularly interesting.
