Jichang Garden is located at the eastern foot of Huishan Mountain in Wuxi and within Xihui Park. It is a classical garden in Wuxi. Jichang Garden introduces the spring water of Huishan Mountain to become the water scenery in the garden. Skillfully using the borrowing scenery technique, one can see the reflection of Longguang Pagoda on Xishan Mountain in the distance in the pond within the garden. The layout is quite unique.
Jichang Garden was once a private garden of an official who returned to his hometown in the Ming Dynasty. It is known as one of the ‘Four Famous Gardens in Jiangnan’ together with Zhanyuan Garden in Nanjing, Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou, and Lingering Garden. The garden centers around rockeries and ponds, surrounded by buildings such as Yupan Pavilion corridor, Zhiyu Threshold, Seven-star Bridge, Hanbi Pavilion, and Qing Imperial Corridor. It also leads the water of ‘Erquan’ (Huishan Spring) to注入沟涧. Due to the gurgling sound, it is called ‘Bayin Gully’. There are also buildings such as ‘Bingli Hall’, a garden within a garden, and ‘Hanzhen Studio’, the former study of the garden owner.
Jichang Garden was deeply loved by Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. They must experience this garden several times when making southern tours. Nowadays, one can still see a stone plaque with Emperor Kangxi’s inscription ‘Mountain Scenery and Stream Light’ and Emperor Qianlong’s inscription ‘Jade Strikes and Golden Pines’. Even the Xiequ Garden in the Summer Palace in Beijing and the Kuoranda Gong (destroyed in the war) in the Old Summer Palace were built imitating Jichang Garden.
In addition, there are towering trees in the garden, which is a good place for taking a summer break. In autumn, one can see the colorful red maples and ginkgo trees.
Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 17:30.
