The Wuzhen Grand Theatre was completed and put into use in May 2013. It is the main venue for the first Wuzhen International Theatre Festival. The theatre is located by the Yuanbao Lake at the entrance of the Xizha scenic area in Wuzhen. To the east is the ecological parking lot of the scenic area, and to the west is the Mu Xin Art Museum. Tourists can reach the theatre by taking a black-awning boat or walking through the trestle on the small island.
The Wuzhen Grand Theatre integrates multiple functions such as drama, concert performances, exhibitions, and cultural and artistic exchanges. It also has auxiliary functions for cultural activities such as rehearsals, meetings, and research. It is known as ‘the most beautiful theater in China’. The design of the theatre is inspired by the twin lotus. Looking down, it is like a blooming twin lotus on the lake. The exterior wall is decorated with ancient Beijing bricks and cracked window lattice made of old ship wood. The theatre has one underground floor and seven above-ground floors. Inside, it consists of a large theater and a medium-sized multi-functional theater, which can accommodate 1,500 spectators in total. The large theater is the core building of the Wuzhen Grand Theatre. The walls and dome of the auditorium are decorated with Wuzhen’s traditional blue calico patterns. There are three tiers of auditoriums. There are also independent boxes on the second floor, with a total of 1,135 seats. The medium theater and the large theater are separated by a soundproof wall that can be raised and lowered. They are connected to each other but also independent. There is a retractable seat stand with 224 seats inside, which can be used as a multi-functional venue for performances, meetings, banquets, and 3D movie screenings.
