Located at the southwest corner of Suzhou, the Wuzhong Taihu Tourism Area is nestled by the shores of Lake Taihu. The ethereal lake views, leisurely rural life on the islands, and seasonal fruits have attracted countless tourists from Suzhou and neighboring cities to relax and de-stress. The tourism area encompasses three major scenic spots: Qionglongshang, Wangshan, and Dongshan, totaling eight attractions, including Qionglongshang, Wangshan, Taihu Park, and those within Dongshan: Luxiang Ancient Village, Diaohua Building, Zijin’an, Qi Garden, and San Shan Island.
Lake Taihu is dozens of kilometers away from Suzhou city, and although it’s a bit far, there are public buses to each attraction. However, the scattered distribution of these spots makes frequent bus transfers inconvenient, leading most tourists to prefer driving. To visit all the attractions in the tourism area, at least 2-3 days are required. Accommodation near the lake is quite convenient, with numerous hotels, including luxurious resorts. If financially feasible, consider staying in a lake-view room. For those who wish to hike, Qionglongshang, with an elevation of 341.7 meters, is a high and large mountain in Suzhou, with vast forests and a great natural environment. Those who find hiking tiring can drive up the mountain road. For a rural experience, visit Wangshan, dine on local cuisine in farmhouse restaurants, and then wander through the mountains where you’ll find vast bamboo forests and the historic Baohua Temple deep within. Taihu Park, situated by the lake, features a symbolic large water wheel. Walking along the wooden walkway by the lake is a great place to enjoy the lake view for free. Dongshan, a peninsula extending into Taihu, is mainly known for its ancient architecture. Luxiang Ancient Village, named after its six old alleys, is the hometown of Wang Ao, a prime minister from the Ming Dynasty’s Zhengde era, who successively won the titles of Jie Yuan, Hui Yuan, and Tan Hua. The three archways named after these titles are landmarks of the ancient village. Diaohua Building offers not only exquisite carvings but also a treasure pavilion, secret passages, and children’s lotus flowers that should not be missed. Zijin’an, with a history of 1400 years, is known for its clay-colored Arhat statues in the main hall. Qi Garden, commonly known as Xi’s Garden, is a typical Suzhou garden with a unique feature of incorporating Taihu Lake views. San Shan Island is a true island in Taihu, and reaching it requires a boat ride from Changqi Wharf in Dongshan Town, Suzhou, to Xianji Wharf on San Shan Island. Renting a bicycle near Xianji Wharf is a good way to explore the island. Local farmhouse restaurants offer the ‘Three Whites of Taihu’ – whitefish, whitebait, and white shrimp, which are definitely delicious! Among the seasonal fruit and vegetable picking activities, autumn oranges are particularly famous. Additionally, natural Taihu stones can be seen on the island’s mountains and lakes. Opening hours are 08:00-17:00 all year round; 09:00-16:00 all year round.Wuzhong Taihu Tourism Area in Suzhou
