The Xiamei Ancient Dwellings, a component of the Wuyishan World Cultural Heritage site, are situated a mere 8 kilometers from the national tourist resort. Nestled 12 kilometers southeast of Wuyishan’s urban center, the ancient village of Xiamei boasts a rich history and has been a cradle of talent. These ancient dwellings, featuring Ming and Qing architectural styles, showcase a harmonious blend of brick, stone, and wood carving arts. Their simple and rustic exteriors, imbued with a strong rural character, contribute to the formation of a distinctive architectural ensemble.
Spanning over 900 meters, artificial canals meander through the village, with pavilions, railings, and picturesque seating areas lining the banks. The village’s ancient streets, wells, docks, buildings, and bazaars, along with the unspoiled local customs, epitomize the quintessential Jiangnan water town style. Within the Xiamei dwellings, more than a dozen ancient plaques have been preserved, their contents categorized into hall and study room plaques, longevity plaques, and respect plaques. The craftsmanship of these plaques varies, including intaglio, relief, and side carving techniques. These plaques, with their rich connotations and exquisite calligraphy, not only chronicle Xiamei Village’s deep cultural history but also represent a treasure trove of calligraphic art.
Among these, the ‘Shizheng Hall’ plaque, inscribed by Qing Dynasty military minister Wang Jie, stands out as a rare gem. Presently, Xiamei is home to nearly 40 well-preserved dwellings, such as Zou’s Ancestral Hall, Xishui Bieye, Zou’s Grand Residence of a High Official, Shizheng Hall, Chen’s Confucianism Main Hall, Zou’s Boudoir Tower, Fang’s Residence of a Military Officer, Cheng’s Residence of a Hermit, as well as ancient structures like Zhengguo Temple and Tianyi Well.Opening hours: From January 1st to December 31st, open from 07:30 to 17:30.
