Xiangji Temple was built in the Song Dynasty and has a history of more than a thousand years. It was originally named Xingfu Temple. During the Dazhong Xiangfu period, Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty bestowed the name Xiangji Temple, which remains to date. It is a famous temple in the Hushu area of Hangzhou. It was once a distribution center for pilgrims to Lingyin Temple and Tianzhu Temple. It is known as the ‘first incense of the Grand Canal’. There were originally two pagodas in Xiangji Temple, built in the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. Now only one pagoda remains. The pagoda has eight sides and nine floors. There is a Xumizuo at the bottom. It is carved in white stone and imitates a wooden structure pavilion. The dougong imitates the Song style. On the east side of the third floor, there is a plaque hanging, with the two characters ‘Ciyun’ engraved on it. The south gate is half-opened. On the fifth floor, a door is opened, and a god and Buddha come out from within the door. The structural technique and relief style of this pagoda are representative works of the Qing Dynasty and are listed as key cultural relics protection units in Zhejiang Province. In 2009, Xiangji Temple was successfully rebuilt and became a rare temple in China mainly dedicated to the Great Sage King of Kundalini (Jianzhai Bodhisattva). The newly-built Xiangji Temple has restored the demolished east pagoda and renovated the original west pagoda, maintaining the original style of the twin pagodas.
