Xianglu Peak stands at an elevation of 354 meters. During cloudy and rainy weather, the mountaintop is enveloped in a misty rain and lingering smoke, known as one of the 12 scenic spots in Yue Zhong, called ‘Fog and Rain at the Peak of the Incense Burner’.
The Xianglu Zen Temple is the main attraction of Xianglu Peak. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, the temple has been a thriving place of worship. It is said that a monk in the Song Dynasty enshrined a jade statue of Guanyin here, which was known as the Southern Tianzhu. Cai Yuanpei once inscribed the horizontal board with ‘Compassionate Clouds Widely Spread’ for the temple. In 1990, funded by overseas Chinese, the temple was rebuilt on the summit of the peak. In 1993, the temple was expanded to cover an area of 15,000 square meters.
