Xiao Longzhong, nestled at the southeast foot of Donglu Mountain and facing the scenic Taihu Lake, is in close proximity to the historic town of Mudu. Originally named Xiao Wangshan and also known as Qin Tai Mountain, this 53.9-meter-high mountain is a treasure trove of ecological and cultural richness.
In 1923, Li Genyuan, in protest against Cao Kun’s corrupt election practices, withdrew from politics and chose Xiao Longzhong as his place of seclusion. He remained there until the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937. During his decade-long retreat, Li Genyuan planted a vast number of pine trees and精心crafted the Ten Scenic Spots of the Pine Sea in Xiao Longzhong, which include Wan Song Pavilion, Ting Song Pavilion, Ting Quan Stone, Chui Lv Peak, Xiao Longzhong itself, Wo Shi Wo, Xiao Jing Tai, Hu Shan Hall, Li Yun Stream, and Ling Chi.
Xiao Longzhong is also renowned as a significant modern stone carving site in East China, boasting an impressive collection of cliff inscriptions. Over 240 celebrities have contributed more than 550 stone inscriptions here, showcasing a diverse array of calligraphic styles such as regular script, cursive script, clerical script, and seal script. This makes Xiao Longzhong an open-air museum of calligraphic art.
