The planned total area of Xiao Nanhu Lake scenic area is 1.661 square kilometers, of which the water area is 0.962 square kilometers. The layout of Xiao Nanhu Lake scenic area is in the shape of a ‘W’ with a horizontal line on top. The horizontal line is Hunan Road. The blank part in the middle of the ‘W’ is the water surface of Xiao Nanhu Lake. There are one pond, two islands, three pavilions and five gardens in the scenic area.
One pond: that is, the water surface of Xiao Nanhu Lake is connected to the main lake through two long bridges, forming a relatively independent and quiet pond with garden architecture. Two islands: referring to the islands extending into the lake from the north and south directions of Hunan Road and the south bank of Hunan Lake. The two islands face each other and the water surfaces are connected. The islands and the shore are connected by landscape bridges, creating the changeable terrain of Xiao Nanhu Lake and also making each land and water tour route have the effect of changing scenery with every step. Three pavilions and five gardens: referring to the classical garden-style buildings here, including pavilions, gardens, courtyards, pavilions by the water, platforms, pavilions, attics, as well as bridges and embankments. The water surface of the entire Xiao Nanhu Lake scenic area is exquisite and the scenery is arranged around the lake. With the guild hall art garden with ‘Jiangnan garden’ characteristics, water-town dwellings, small bridges and flowing water, famous gardens with flowing fragrance, and lotus ponds with fish and lotus roots as the main landscapes, it forms the characteristics of Chinese classical humanities and natural landscapes of ‘quiet lake and secluded garden’.
