Xiaohe Zhi Street Historical District is located at the confluence of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Xiaohe River, and Yuhangtang River. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, it has been a hub for the distribution of goods by water and land from the north and south. By the Qing Dynasty, it had developed into an independent commercial street. Today, the district still retains historical relics such as workshops, shops, and river docks.
On both sides of the street, small buildings are nestled against the water, with whitewashed walls and black tiles, showcasing the characteristics of modern Jiangnan water towns. More than half of the original residents remain in the district, effectively continuing the traditional customs and lifestyle of canal-side dwellings. Walking here, one hears not the hustle and bustle of traffic, but the laughter of neighbors; instead of seeing a jungle of high-rise buildings, one sees comfortable and elegant ancient residences. A stroll around is very pleasant. The district is open all year round and accessible 24/7.Must Read
