Xijindu, also known as Xijindu Historical and Cultural Block, is located in the northwest of Zhenjiang urban area. It takes only fifteen minutes to walk from Jinshan Park to the east. Here is an area of old houses with a strong historical atmosphere. The well-known Xijindu Ancient Street is located here. Xijindu has been a ferry terminal since the Three Kingdoms period. Later, as the riverbank gradually moved northward, the ferry is no longer there, leaving only the Xijindu Ancient Street on the mountainside of Yuntai Mountain. Climbing dozens of steps from the east can lead to the Xijindu Ancient Street on the mountainside. The further west one goes, the lower the terrain. The ancient street is paved with old bluestones. On both sides are traditional dwellings and gable walls built with blue bricks, showing great vicissitudes. At the eastern section of the ancient street, there is the ‘Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda’ built in the Yuan Dynasty. It is a street-crossing stone pagoda in China. Tourists can pass through under the tower base. Next to the stone pagoda is the Guanyin Cave built in the Song Dynasty. It is excavated on the mountain body and is a place for praying for safety. Opposite is the Life Saving Association, a water safety rescue institution built in the Qing Dynasty. These two scenic spots charge fees. Continuing to walk west, there are small scenic spots such as Xiaoshanlou and Waiting-for-Ferry Pavilion. Xiaoshanlou is a small wooden building built in the Tang Dynasty. Under the eaves of the building hangs a plaque inscribed with ‘Jinlingdu’ by Mr. Yu Qiuyu. In front of the building, one can overlook the layers of blue tiles of the old houses in the block. The Waiting-for-Ferry Pavilion was once a place where ancients waited for ships or took a short rest and sheltered from the rain. Legend has it that Emperor Qianlong also stopped in this pavilion. After passing the Waiting-for-Ferry Pavilion, one can see various shops on both sides, including teahouses, handicraft stores, and noodle shops. All kinds of interesting shop signs are hung, showing a somewhat petty bourgeoisie atmosphere. If you have a craving, you can taste snacks such as number one scholar cakes and stinky tofu. The prices are not expensive. The ancient street is not long. It takes about half an hour to walk through while strolling. If you still have more to enjoy, you can return to the Waiting-for-Ferry Pavilion along the same route. From here, going down the downhill road can lead to the Old Wharf Cultural Block. Here, there are many retro旧址 buildings such as the Texaco Foreign Firm. You can take pictures here as souvenirs. You can also climb to the Yuntai Pavilion on the top of the mountain behind the ancient street to overlook the urban area. Especially at night, the old block is very beautiful.
