Xilin Buddhist Temple, originally known as ‘Xilin Jing She’. It was first built in the 13th year of Xiantong in the Tang Dynasty (872). It has a history of more than 700 years. In 1387 AD, the 20th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, it was rebuilt and renamed as Xilin Buddhist Temple. A pagoda was also built, commonly known as Xilin Pagoda. At the same time, it is also to commemorate Master Yuanying, the founder of Yunjian Reception Courtyard in the Southern Song Dynasty.
Therefore, it is also called Yuanying Pagoda. The pagoda has seven floors and is 46.5 meters high. The tower is majestic and imposing. None of the pagodas in the three Wu regions can surpass it. It is famous far and near. During the Zhengtong period, Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty bestowed an inscribed board and conferred the title ‘Daming Xilin Buddhist Temple’. At that time, there were more than 600 monks. The evening drums and morning bells and the Buddhist chants were extremely prosperous for a time and continued into the Qing Dynasty. The Dharma has been passed on from generation to generation. With successive expansions over generations, it is known as a famous temple in the south of the Yangtze River. Opening hours: Open all year round from 07:00 to 16:30.
