Xinchang Ancient Town, located in Pudong New Area, has a history of more than 800 years since it got its name. In ancient times, it was a prosperous salt field and salt market. Now, a large number of Ming and Qing architecture are still preserved. Although Xinchang is about more than 40 kilometers away from the urban area, compared with other ancient towns in Shanghai, it is more peaceful and simple.
It is not overly commercialized and is a Jiangnan ancient town where you can feel the breath of life everywhere. Xinchang Ancient Town is not large. A narrow and long old street, several water alleys and small lanes basically make up the whole ancient town. In the ancient town, along the narrow river are old-style houses with white walls and black tiles. Walking on the flagstone road of the old street, crossing the stone arch bridge carved with exquisite patterns, and passing through the mottled stone memorial archway, you can feel the charm of years everywhere. Similar to other ancient towns, Xinchang Ancient Town also has many local snacks. You can taste stinky tofu, tapioca cake, Xiasha steamed dumplings and so on. But here there are no shops all over the street and no bustling crowds. In addition to snack bars and handicraft shops, you can also see quiet coffee bars, traditional barber shops and grocery stores, as well as local old people sitting by the wall reading newspapers and basking in the sun. There are also many historical sites in the ancient town, such as the ‘Zhang’s Residence’, a four-entry courtyard built in the late Qing Dynasty, the First Floor Tea Garden initially built during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, as well as the Church, Dongyue Temple, China Copper Gong and Drum Art Museum, Xinchang History and Culture Exhibition Hall and other scenic spots. Some scenic spots require tickets to enter. In fact, in recent years, the popularity of Xinchang Ancient Town has increased more because of the movie ‘Lust, Caution’ directed by Ang Lee. In the film, the scenes where Tang Wei and Wang Leehom are in the teahouse and Tang Wei is walking on the bridge are filmed here. You can also look for the shots in the movie.Opening hours: Open all day all year round
